Paper presented at the Symposium on the Occasion of the 1100th Anniversary of Methodius's Death, Ljubljana, 11 Dec 1985. The sources preserved about the life & work of the Thessalonian brothers Cyril & Methodius are surprisingly numerous - undoubtedly a unique proof of their effective impact on the Slavic people. Prince Rostislav made a request to the Constantinople emperor Michael the Third asking for a teacher & a bishop for the Christian Slavs in Pannonia & Moravia who lacked an organized church hierarchy. Cyril's & Methodius's missionary method is marked by: (1) liturgy in the vernacular, (2) the education & training of native clergy, (3) a linkup with Rome (the Thessalonian brothers wanted to establish an independent & autonomous church for the Slavs but within the legal structure of the Church of Rome; this plan was approved by Pope Hadrian the Second who named Methodius the bishop of Pannonia & appointed him a papal legate for the Slavs), & (4) the promotion of ordered & irreproachable family life.
