Data gathered from the town of Smartna pri Dobrovem, Yugoslavia, shows that in several speech variants from the western part of Goriska Brda, the reduction of the unstressed vowels in the final syllables was followed by a lengthening of the formerly stressed penultimate vowel, an unusual phenomenon for Slovenian. A change in the intonational pattern was also noticed. Thus, Slovenian dialectal metatony is established. HA Tr & Modified by M. Meeks
