Miklos Luttar, a Slovene public school teacher, published Mali katekizmus (Concise Catechism Murska Sobota, 1888), a bilingual, Hungarian-Slovene text based on a Hungarian source. The attempts by some Slovene Catholic authorities to correct language usage in the Slovene part, perceived to be too Magyarized, are related, with special attention to a list of corrections proposed by dean Vendel Ratkovic. However, Luttar adopted only some of the corrections in the 1891 edition of the religious textbook. An excerpt from a local newspaper article dated Jan. 8, 1893, commenting on the third, 1892 edition, provides an explanation for the author's resistance to cleanse the Slovene text of Magyarisms: the catechism was intended as an aid to facilitate & speed up the learning of Hungarian. 4 References.
