This article proposes a new approach to compare the human capital (hcm) and the friction cost methods (fcm) which are used to measure health-related production losses. We seek to produce guidelines on which method should be used rather than trying to establish the superiority of one method over the other. We show that the choice between the hcm and the fcm should be based on two main criteria: the type of absence from work under consideration (sickness absence or death) and the type of economic evaluation used (Cost-Effectiveness, Cost-Utility etc.). These guidelines are elaborated so as to avoid underestimation and double counting of the costs of illness. Classification JEL : D61, I1, J3
