The article discusses solar energy exploitation on Kras, one of the sunniest Slovenian regions. GIS methods were used to assemble a decision tree model that provided areas most suitable for solar energy exploitation. Areas suitable for extensive (energy efficient housing) and intensive (solar power plants) use have been defined. Simulations were employed to determine combinations of azimuth and inclination for solar energy collectors that would enable theirmaximum efficiency. As expected, high inclinations with southern orientation are optimal during winter, however, almost flat installations are optimal during summer.
