Maps in newspapers allow the users a faster and easier perception and information gathering without the actual reading of the text. They also help the journalists to present the information, where spatial relationships are of important relevance in a graphical way.The paper is based on the diploma thesis “Analysis and use of newspaper maps” and contains the overall description of newspaper maps as one of the groups of thematic maps. Map design is not a routine work and this holds true for newspaper maps, too. Every single item, i.e. map, has its own characteristics, butnevertheless all newspapers maps have some common attributes in terms of design and content. The appropriate content and design of maps were evaluated based on maps published in different Sloveniannewspapers and magazines. These were compared to some examples taken from foreign newspapers.
