The castle was built in the 12th century by Albert Trušenjski - Marenberg. Originally a Romanesque building with two towers, the castle was enlarged in the Gothic period and other buildings were added in the Renaissance, and the castle also had a defensive moat and a drawbridge. In 1697, the castle burnt down and was not rebuilt, but was instead replaced by a castle annex, today Mahrenberg Manor or Radlje ob Dravi Manor. Today, only the ruins of the mighty castle building remain, which were protected and fortified in 2013, as well as access paths and a viewing platform.
