  • Music education - an important creator of a child's value system
    Habe, Katarina
Our modern society for some decades now faces an increasing crisis of human values. The value of "having" has become far more important than the value of "being". We also acknowledge this trend in ... the musical field. It has become evident that in the twentieth century the condition of "art music" in Western culture has undergone a huge transformation. The reasons for this transformation are many and varied including the influence of technology, the media and the resultant exposure to new cultures and ethnic traditions, commercialism, the increased emphasis on visual media and various cultural, ideological and social changes. Ancient cultures heId strong beliefs in the moral and ethical power of music and as such it was imperative for artists within those cultures to exercise a certain moral and ethical responsibility in their creative endeavors. A great responsibility for creating the value system of young generations was also put on music educators. In Ages past music was not considered merely an entertainment but rather was associated with religious and philosophical beliefs Examining the perceptions and understandings of the ancient's attitude about music can be most beneficial for our spiritual and social development. Nowadays we seem to neglect the importance of music in creating the value system of the young generation. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the role of music education in forming a solid value system in children - from eliciting music emotions, through socialization of musical preferences and musical taste in children, to creating a "heaIthy" value system in children.
