  • Genotoksične kemijske snovi v našem okolju = [Genotoxic substances in the environment]
Filipič, Metka, 1954- ; Adamič, Jelisava
Modern technology allows chemical industry to introduce thousands of new substances every year. With the increasing of the number of new substances also the number of potentially harmful substances ... is increasing. Many of thesemay be genotoxic. In humans they may cause cancer, degenerative diseasesand heritable diseases. Systematic monitoring of new chemicals, products and environmental pollutants is crucial for implementation of successful preventive measures. The sources of genotoxic substances that are extremely difficult to control are food products, environmental pollution due to industrial and municipal wastes and air pollution. Food products are complex mixtures, containing hundreds of different ingredients among which some may be genotoxic. Many studied showed, that mutagens are formed during food processing, cooking and several industrial processes. Many efforts are focused on introducing technological processes where less genotoxic products are formed. Chemical and allied industry is producing great quantities of dangerous wostes and waste waters. Data from EPA showed that 79% of dangerous wastes originates from chemical and allied industry. Important group of environmental genotoxic substances are pesticides. Residues can be found in food products and because of the widespread use they can be found in sources of drinking water. Many pesticides are mutagenic and carcinogenic so they represent significant risk for cancer and heritable diseases in humans. Air pollutants are many inorganic and organic compounds, depending on the source. In urban areas the major sources of pollution are incomplete combustion products. They contain many organic compounds including aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic amines among which many are known mutagens and carcinogens. Several epidemiologicol studies showed that the frequency of Iung cancer in urban areas is increased compared to rural areas. (trunc. at 2000 chars)
