This thesis critically examines riot grrrl, the underground feminist punk rock movement, from its inception to today. Using music, zine writing and feminist activism as the central focus, the thesis ...explores the methods of riot grrrl's cultural and music revolution and the problems with which it was faced. The revolution of riot grrrl is grounded in feminism and punk. By screaming politically charged lyrics in punk rhetoric, performance shock tactics and use of their bodies they fought for the symbolical and physical inclusion of girls in the alternative scene and society. The main goal behind their DIY activism and production lies in challenging the hegemonic social order, disrupting gender normativity as well as resisting the capitalist and corporate music industry. By encouraging sisterhood, they addressed inequality and non-inclusion of women in the punk community and society at large as well as sexism and masculinist norms of the punk scene and mainstream society. They built participatory safe spaces, where they could gain knowledge, talk, create and get inspired. In the beginning of the 1990s riot grrrl emerged from the undergrounds of Olympia, Washington and Washington, D.C., but in the following years riot grrrl networks soon spread around the world. Riot grrrl as a movement disintegrated, but its cultural impact can still be seen today in numerous formations, from musicians, collectives, rock camps, festivals to exhibitions and writings.
