This thesis proposes a reading of the novel Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell from the perspective of posthumanism. It first provides a short history of the development of posthumanism from the ...philosophical and cybernetic perspective. It then defines it and examines approaches associated with applying posthumanism to literary works through Neil Badmington and N. Katherine Hayles% writing. It highlights the main discrepancies between the humanist and posthumanist view of the subject, especially in terms of agency, individuality, and (im)mutability, as well as humanist postulates about dualisms and the human essence. The posthumanist approach is applied to Cloud Atlas firstly in terms of its unconventional structure and narrative, followed by the analysis of the main characters and storylines. The analysis shows that the novel already at the narrative level moves away from the traditional forms. On the level of the plot, it argues that one of the narratives in particular is already deeply informed by posthumanism, while other novellas expose at least some elements of the disintegration of humanism. Finally, the thesis suggests that although the novel perpetuates the humanist belief in a universal human essence, it nevertheless exposes cracks in humanist philosophy, which undermine the core principles of humanism and lead towards posthumanism.
