  • Wear properties of plasma and pulsed plasma nitrided steel
Podgornik, Bojan ; Vižintin, Jože ; Leskovšek, Vojteh
Aim of our study was to investigate and to compare tribological and mechanical properties of AISI 4140 steel after plasma and pulsed plasma nitriding as well as to determine the influence of ... pulsation on these properties. Nitrided surfaces were fully characterised, using metalographic, microscopy, microhardness and profilometry techniques. Surface characterisation was performed before and after each surface treatment as well as after wear testing. Wear tests were performed on Pin-on-Disc wear testing machine, where nitrided pins were mated to hardened ball bearing steel discs. Wear tests were carried out under dry sliding conditions where hardened samples were used as a reference. The resulting wear loss as well as the coefficient of friction were monitored as a function of load, sliding speed and test time. In order to determine prevailing wear mechanisms, worn surfaces and wear debris were also analysed.
