  • Wear resistance of duplex treated steel

An innovative approach to improving tribological behavior of surfaces and meeting long-term durability requirements of engineering devices and tools is to design and develop novel systems ... incorporating multilayers and/or duplex diffusion/plasma coating treatments. In the present work, wear resistance of plasma nitrided AISI 4140 steel coated with different PVD coatings (TiN, TiAlN and DLC) was studied by pin-on-disc experiments. To examine the influence of nitriding pre-treatment, steel substrate was plasma nitrided under different conditions, producing compound layer and diffusion zone of varying thickness. The results of the investigation showed that wear resistance of hard-coated steel was dramatically improved. Comparisons between duplex treated (N-diffusion layer/hard coating) and single layer coated steel showed that duplex treatment possessed a significantly higher wear resistance. Nitriding was found to cause substrate hardening that reduces subsurface deformation, thus improving coating support and extending hard coating lifetime.
