  • Application of vibroacoustic analysis for diagnosis of gear assemblies
    Lakota, Miran ; Flašker, Jože
The procedures for early damage determination on machines and assemblies due to material fatigue are becoming increasingly popular. The most comon method used today is the measurement of ... accelerations on the gear housing. The main advantage of this method lies in the fact that one can reliably determine the eigen frequencies in the frequency spectrum of the gear assembly from the number of gear revolutions, the number of gear teeth, and the number of roller bearings and their geometry. This provides for easy determination of any gear damage by observing the changes in the frequency spectrum as the damage develops. With modern measurement equipment it is even possible to exactly determine the type, the position and the extent of the damage. The measured signals are often so complex that it is impossible determine directly the relationships between the recorded symptoms and the damage. However, the transformation of the recorded signal from the time domain to the frequency domain and the cepstrum domain with the aid of the fast Fourier transform enables a clearer derivation of relationships and the damage caused. From the reported measurements and analyses done with modern measuring equipment and proper computer software for digital signal analysis it can be concluded that it is possible to observe the characteristic changes in the frequency spectrum which are generated with the fatigue crack growth in the gear tooth root. The changes are in the form of signal amplitude increase at the frequency of gear engagement and its side band frequencies together with the change of some characteristic values in the time and frequency domain, e.g. the RMS value.
