A modified EMG biofeedback device for the detection and prevention of brixism is presented. On bruxist activity, when the force of normal cheying is exceedd, an electronic switch triggers a painful ...stimulus which is conveyed bythe same pathway as the EMG signal. The use and function of the device are illustrated in Figures 2-4. The device was tested in 18 volunteers with a centric bruxist habit. A good result was obtained in 12 patients who used the device for seven to 14 successive nights. The remaining six patients discontinued the treatment after three to seven nights because of inadequate motivation. During the treatment, all the patients wore removable splints or temporary bridges made of acrylic resin. For a successful outcome, the biofeedback therapy should be complemented with psychological preperation and prosthetic rehabilitacion.
