  • Forty years of treatment and care of children and adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes in Slovenia = Štirideset let zdravljenja otrok in mladostnikov z inzulinsko odvisno sladkorno boleznijo v Sloveniji
    Kržišnik, Ciril, 1944-2024 ...
In Slovenia the prevalence of insulin - dependent diabetes in children aged upto 15 years was 71,1 per 100000 on January 1, 1998, while the annual incidence in the period from 1988 to 1995 was 8 per ... 100 000. Emergency treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis at the onset of disease or later on is performed in the nearest pediatric department. The complex programme of treatment, education including self monitoring and adaptation of insulin dosesto the parameters of metabolic control, and psycho- social care have beenorganised at the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, University Children's Hospital, Ljubljana by a team composed of pediatricians-diabetologists, specially trained nurses, a dietician, social worker, psychologist and other consultants if necessary. Our department also provides 24 hours consultations for all diabetic children and their parents. The value of a summer camp at the Adriatic coast, as well as of a periodical and of a club for the parents of young diabetics for the education and health care of children suffering from diabetes is stressed. All diabetic children are treated with human insulin, generally with short and intermediate acting preparations given twice a day, while in 90% of the adolescents, intensifiend insulin therapy is performed. The positive experience regarding metabolic control and quality of life with a multi- ple injection regimen using pen-injectors or insulin pumps in young diabetics is emphasised. The modern concept of regular diabetic nutrition and self adjustment of insulin doses to measurements of parameters of metabolic control was introduced in 1960.
