Sočan, Maja ; Kraigher, Alenka, 1950- ; Pahor, Lilijana, epidemiolog, 1958-
Background. Varicella is one of the most frequent childhood diseases. The course of the disease is usually mild and uncomplicated. Methods. Varicella isa notifiable communicable disease in Slovenia ... from year 1977. Data collectedfrom 1979 to 1998 were analysed. Results and conclusions. In the timeperiod of twenty years (from 1979 to 1998) from 21,086 (in year 1994) to 21,242 (in year 1987) varicella cases were reported, on average 16,061 cases. During the last ten years the highest incidence of varicella was notified in children aged from twelve month to two years. In year 1998 the incidence in this age group was approximately 14,000/100,000. In aged over 30 the incidenceis slightly but steadily increasing during the whole 20-year period. Overall, the number of males (50.2%) with varicella exceeded females (49.80%) The proportion of females was higher only in the age group from 20 to 30 years, probably as a consequence of more frequent and close contact with diseased child. The highest number of reported cases was during winter and early spring. The percentage of hospitalised varicella patients was low - 0.57% of all notified cases.
