    Ventilation-perfusion lung scintigraphy allows the determination of the regional distribution of lung perfusion and ventilation. In recent years, it has become the most important imaging method for ... the detection of acute pulmonary emboli. A special advantage of this method is that the criteria of high diagnostic reliability of the examination (high and low to very low probability emboli) or, conversely, of its low diagnostic value (intermediate or indeterminate probability of pulmonary emboli), in which case additional investigations are required, are well defined and standardised. Good knowledgeof clinical and scintigraphic probability of the presence of pulmonary emboli is required for high quality clinical work and appropriate therapy of such patients.
