  • Rizični dejavniki napredovanja parodontalne bolezni = Risk factors for the progression of periodontal disease
    Kovač-Kavčič, Marija ; Skalerič, Uroš, 1945-2023
The periodontal status of 411 adult residents of Ljubljana was evaluated in two epidemiological surveys conducted in the years 1983-1987 (1.609 subjects) and 1993-1997 (538 subjects). Eighty-seven ... subjects with maximum CPITN scores of 0. 1 or 2 on initial evaluation had an unchanged periodontal status 10 years later. Sixty-five subjects with initial CPITN scores of 0, 1, 2 or 3 developed deep periodontal pockets (>=6 mm) over the 10-year period and were awarded a CPITN score of 4 on the second evaluation. Bivariate analysis of data for the two groups revealed the following risk factors for the progression of periodontal disease: advanced age, male gender. low level of education married status, cigarette smoking, increased body mass index, scaling and planing performed in the last 10 years, and a low frequency of tooth brushing. Multivariate regression analysis showed that advanced age, cigarette smoking, and scaling in the last 10 years significantly increased the patients risk for the progression of periodontal disease. Heavy smokers (>=20 cigarettes per day) were five to six times more likely to develop deep periodontal pockets over the 10-year period than nonsmokers.
