Background. According to the data of population-based cancer registries acute leukemias account for less than 2.5% of cancer cases among the population of all ages. However, acute leukemias are the ... most common form of cancer among children under the age of 15 years. In our study the descriptive epidemiologicfeatures of acute leukemias in Slovenia in the period 1987-1996 were described: incidence by year of observation, age, gender, percentages of subtypes of acute leukemias, distribution of incidence by communes, relative survival rate for the period 1987-1993. Patients and Methods. A total of 665 patients with acute leukemias, reported to the Cancer Registry of Slovenia in the period 1987-1996, were included in the analysis. Standard methods of descriptive epidemiology were used for the analysis. Results. Acute leukemias accounted for 29% of all registered cancer cases among children under the age of 15 years and 0.8% of all cancer cases among adults in the period 1987-1996.The incidence of all acute leukemias increased only slightly in the observed period. The incidence of acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) was higherthan the incidence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in all years ofobservation. ALL accounted for 78.9% of all acute leukemias among children, and AML accounted for the largest proportion (70.9%) of acute leukemias among adults. The one-year relative survival rate was with 88.8% most favourable forthe group of children with ALL under the age of 15 years. Conclusions. Our study revealed similar epidemiologic features of acute leukemias as described in some developed countries. On the other hand we woud like to emphasize the importance of continuous cooperation of clinicians with the Cancer Registry ofSlovenia.
