    The role of electroencephalography in the diagnostic evaluation of epilepsy has already been extensively assessed. Its sensitivity depends on a proper investigative strategy and can increase up to 80 ... or even 92%. Its specificity can be relatively good in healthy subjects, but less satisfactory in populations with a higher incidence of cerebral disease or dysfunction. Certain diagnostic problems that cannot be adequately addressed by interictal recording can be resolved by special procedures. The diagnostic significance of epileptiform activity in the electroencephalogram depends on the clinical context. Ignoring this context often leads to misunderstandings and incorrect conclusions.
