  • Epilepsija in kognitivne sposobnosti pri šolskem otroku = Epilepsy and cognitive abilities in school children
    Tretnjak, Vali
The assessment of the impact of childhood epilepsy on cognitive functions is acomplex and demanding field which requires the collaboration of various sciences. Functional brain imaging techniques ... have demonstrated that epileptogenic foci may sometimes be regarded as functional lesions associated with functional and structural pathological changes in specific parts of the brain. Many children with brain lesions but without epilepsy have difficultiesthat are similar to those of children with epilepsy. In general, seizures themselves do not cause behavioural problems, social maladjustment orpoor learning. However, attention disorder, memory problems and learning disabilities can accompany epilepsy. If a child with epilepsy has severe learning difficulties, it is important to assess his cognitive abilities (withthe child's strengths and weaknesses), which can contribute significantlyto the understanding of the child's needs and planning the supportive strategies.
