Intestinal permeability in multiply injured patients = Prepustnost črevesne stene pri politravmatiziranih poškodovancihKompan, Lidija ; Prošek, Mirko ; Bukovac, TatjanaBackground. The gut hypothesis of multiple organ failure claims that intraluminal microbial and endotoxin translocation mostly occurs because of increased intestinal permeability; it activities ... proinflammatory mediators andleads to multiple organ failure. These events are most frequently elicited by shock of various etiologies. To determine whether multiple trauma is associated with increased intestinal permeability the lactulose-mannitol test was introduced in the evaluation of our ICU (intensive acre unit) patients. Methods. Multiply injuries and shoked patients with the injury severity score (ISS) of>25 were studied. Intestinal permeability was asessed on posttrauma days 2 and 4 using a lactulose and mannitol solution given enterally. The lactulose/mannitol ratio was calculated from the urinary portion of the probe molecules. Results. The average lactulose/mannitol ratio was 0.016 +- 0.012 infive volunteers, and 0.21 +- 0.61 in 30 multiple injuries patients. On the second and fourth day the ration was 0.11 +- 0.28 and 0.37 +- 1.05, respectively. Intestinal permeability determined in our patients on days 2 and4 did not differ significantly from that in control values. Concluisons. Intestinal permeability increases after the injury; yet the increase in multiple injured patients is not significantly grater than in healthy volunteers.Source: Zdravniški vestnik : glasilo Slovenskega zdravniškega društva = Slovenian medical journal = journal of Slovenian Medical Association. - ISSN 1318-0347 (Letn. 69, št. 12, dec. 2000, str. 799-802)Type of material - article, component partPublish date - 2000Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 12595929
