Intensive urban environments, with their heat and flow characteristics, affect the response of the human body, which can be especially burdensome for at-risk groups. During a hot period, we monitored ...the microclimatic conditions and air quality in an indoor environment and simultaneously measured the physiological responses in elderly patients with cardiovascular disease. The results show that heart rate and blood pressure are significantly affected by the Humidex index and CO2 concentration in the air (p < 0.05) as indicators of air quality. Consequently, we created models of physiological response dependence on thermal load and air quality, and used them to evaluate the impact of mitigation measures in heat street canyons. With numerical analysis, we evaluated the thermal and flow characteristics of green surfaces, parks and transport. Using a method combining the thermal response of the urban environment and the thermal response of the building, we proved that the design and spatial distribution of the building can reduce the indoor air temperature by 2 °C, or halve the concentration of pollutants in the worst case scenarios. In the evaluation of exposure mitigation measures based on the mortality risk, we found that the risk may be reduced by one third relative to the worst case scenario if our design is used.
