Primary care physician involved in pediatrics daily evaluates growth of children and adolescents. Subnormal growth should not be neglected or underevaluated. Identifity growth disorders is important ...for several reasons: disordered growth may be a sign of serious disease; identified causes of shortstature may be eliminated or treated and normal growth restored; serious growth impairment, either untreated or untreatable, represents a major handicap and has a devastating effects on the quality of life. Types of subnormal growth are listed and briefly discussed and diagnostic approach at the primary care setting introduced. Importance of meticulous history, physical examination, anthropometric measurements and proper interpretation ofgrowth pattern is emphasised. Guidelines for laboratory investigations are proposed. Diagnostic algorithm suitable for primary care setting based only onhistory, and physical examination is introduced. Majority of patients exhibiting subnormal growth should be reffered to the specialist in the clinical setting. Treatement with growth hormone and other therapeutic modalities are presented.
