Pogostnost valgusne in varusne deformacije kolen pri mariborskih osnovnošolcih = Incidence of valgus and varus knee malformation among the primary school population in Maribor

Intermalleolar (IMD) and intercondylar (ICD) distance were measured during a periodical check-up in 5,277 schoolchildren from Maribor to find out the incidence of knee malformations in this ...population. The results were statistically analysed taking into account some other data (gender, age, BMI).Nearly 70% of children examined showed no signs of knee malformation. Average IMD values during the growth period are slightly higher than ICD, withthe exception of children older than 13 years; whose average ICD value is higher than IMD. Obese children have higher average IMD and lower ICD. Pathologic (varus or valgus) knee malformation was found in 45 children. Measurement of IMD and ICD should become a part of locomotor apparatus examination during periodical check-ups in schoolchildren. Detailed evaluationis required in: children with one-sided malformation; those with rapidly increasing IMD and ICD; and in all boys with IMD > 8 cm and ICD >5 cm and all girls with IMD > 8 cm and ICD > 4 cm.
