  • Psihiater v domu starejših občanov = The psychiatrist in the nursing home

    In this article, some problems of the aged living in the nursing home and suffering from mental diseases are presented. The most common diseases and their treatment are described and the importance ... of a psychiatrist in this treatment, his co-operation with a physician and other medical staff, and alsowith the relatives. Since there are some particularities of mental diseaseof the elderly and their treatment with psychotropics, it is necessary that a consiliary psychiatrist visits the nursing home on a regular basis. Hisrole is very important and it is proved that regular visits of psychiatristin the nursing home substantially reduce the number of suicides and heteroaggresive behaviour among the elderly. It is also noteworthy that the need to take this people to psychiatric hospitals is reduced. At the same time, some misunderstandings between elderly in their relatives on one side and the home's staff on the other side are less often.
