  • Značilnosti periferne arterijske okluzivne bolezni pri bolnikih s končno ledvično odpovedjo = Characterstics of peripheral arterial occlusive disease in patients with end-stage renal disease
    Šabovič, Mišo
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is more frequent in patients withend-stage renal disease (ESRD) than in the general population. The course of the disease in ESRD patients is worse, the ... complications and amputations are more frequent and the mortality is higher. Apart from the standard risk factors, non-standard ones (chronic inflammation, elevated levels of lp(a) andhomocysteine, calcifications in the arterial wall, etc.), specifically present in patients with ESRD, probably play an important role in the accelerated rate of atherosclerosis. High amputation rate is due to the specific diffuse nature of the PAOD, which frequently prevents revascularization, whereas the high mortality rate is mainly due to the high comorbidity in patients with ESRD. Consideration of specific characteristics of the diagnostic procedures and therapeutic options is necessary in the management of PAOD in ESRD patients.
