    Leukocytosis, an elevation of the white blood cell count (WBC), is one of the most common problems in clinical medicine. An elevated WBC should be designated by the name of the principal cell type, ... i. e. neutrophilic, eosinophilic, basophilic, lymphocytic or monocytic leukocytosis. The most common cause of elevated total WBC is neutrophilic leukocytosis. Therefore, reactive leukocytosis is the response of normal bone marrow to various external stimuli, while in rare cases leukocytosis is the sign of a primary bone marrow abnormality that affects WBC production. These disorders should beevaluated using bone marrow cytology and/or histology.
