    The connection between the cardiovascular system and kidneys in regulating thevolume and composition of bodily fluids surpasses the current fragmentationof patient management to various internal ... medicine specialities. Therefore, multiorgan impairment in the elderly requires an integration of knowledge in the various specialities of internal medicine. In cardiorenal anemia, the expertise of a hematologist, cardiologist and nephrologist intertwine. Newer possibilities for early treatment with erythropoietin ensurebetter results of treatment in patients with secondary anemia resulting from initial global renal insufficiency and concurrent renal hypoperfusion dueto heart failure. When and to what extent should one treat secondary anemia? The target hemoglobin values in the treatment of anemia with erythropoietin in chronic renal insufficiency are close to those on the lower limit of the normal range, reducing stress on the heart and enabling better cognitive functioning.
