Zdravljenje apikalnega parodontitisa v luči ponovnega zanimanja medicine za žariščne okužbe = Management of apical periodontitis in the light of the renewed interest of medicine in focal infections

There is as yet no adequate proof that apical periodontitis can lead to systemic disease, although numerous studies have shown that pathological agents can migrate from the diseased periodontium to ...nearby and distant regions of the body. Therefore the treatment of apical periodontitis has remained basically unchanged, and most cases are still managed by root canal therapy. The detection of apical inflammatory changes is based on intraoral radiographs and vitality tests. However, both methods have their limitations, which must be taken into account. Some newer techinques promise to provide more reliable diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The principal prophylactic measures include early detection and treatment of caries, and care to preservethe dental pulp during dental procedures. The renewed interest of medical research in focal infections as a possible source of systemic disease has underscored the dentist's responsibility for early detection, appropriate treatment and effective prevention of this condition.
