    Background. To review the use and proposed mechanisms of amniotic membrane transplantation in the ocular surgery: preparing and storage; indication for the use of amniotic membrane and description of ... different surgical procedures.Methods. Significant clinical and e.xperimental publications are reviewed and our results are presented. Results. Amniotic membrane transplantation stimulates epithelialization and has anti-inflammatory and anticicatrical effect. Conclusions. Good results of treatment with amniotic membrane transplantation can be seen in resolving a persistent epithelial defect of the cornea, symptomatic bullous keratopathy after cataract surgery, acute chemical and thermal burn of the ocular surface and limbal stem cell deficiency.
