Occupational disorders due to overuse of the upper extremities represent a serious health issue and a heavy financial burden. Since these injuries tend to develop slowly, their occupational aetiology ...usually remains unrecognized. Criteria for the verification of occupational upper extremity overuse disorders were established on the basis of pertinent evidence-based literaturereports. For the upper extremity overuse syndromes to be verified asoccupational diseases, history of occupational exposure and information about work conditions in terms of type, intensity and time of exposure, are required. Overuse disorders of tendons, tendon sheets and tendon insertions ofthe upper extremities have to be confrrmed by history, physical examination and functional tests. The orthopaedist verifies the diagnosis by ultrasound, X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging or by other valid and reliable diagnostic tests. The minimum duration of exposure to risk factors, which is as a rule four months, and the maximum latent period, which lasts up to five days, have to be considered.
