Background and aim. In Slovenia the lowest social economic and the worst health indicators are registered in the most north eastern part, Pomurje Region. Health enhancing programme, financially ...supported by the Government ofthe Republic of Slovenia, was lounched in this region in 2001. In the present study first results of assessment of efficiency of this programme are presented. Methods. Specific health promotion programme for rural population to influence unhealthy health behaviours (unhealthy nutrition, heavy alcohol drinking, smoking, insufficient physical activity etc.), was organised for 12 months in entire adult population of Beltinci community in Pomurje Region. 303adults aged 25-64 were invited to participate in the study of evaluating programme efficiency. The intervention programme was the same as in other inhabitants of this community. Several measurements were performed prior and after the intervention. The differences were statistically analysed using paired t-test. Results The response rate at both measurements was 52,1% (158/303). The results of testing the differences show improvement in all observed indicators. Average values decreased after 1 year of intervention in:systolic blood pressure for 4,7% (p < 0,001), diastolic blood pressure for 4,1% (p < 0,001), total cholesterol for 4,9% (p = 0,001), and body mass index for 3,2% (p = 0,005). In fitness index the average value increased for 9,7% (p= 0,003). Conclusions. The results of the study, though rough, show that thehealth promotion programme in Beltinci community proved to be very efficient.
