Različnost žvečenja med spoloma = The influence of gender on mastication

Background: The aim of our study was to examine differences in the shape and timing of chewing movements between the sexes. Materials and methods: The study was performed on 20 adult subjects with a ...full dentition. The group consisted of 10 males and 10 females with a mean age of 24.6 years. Movements of the mandible were recorded during chewing of a standardized bolus. A sirognathograph coupled to a computer and a new computer programme developed by the authors (COSIG II) were used in the study. Analysis of the chewing cycles included 11 variables of shape and eight variables of time. Results andconclusions: The analysis revealed significant differences in the pattern of mastication between females and males for four variables of shape and one variable of time. The men tended to open their mouth more during chewing, while the women used slower movements with more pronounced retrusion of the mandible.
