Some suggestions towards the clarification of the concept "sound symbolism"

The paper begins with a general survey of sound symbolism and of the conflicting views on its presence in language, identifying three of the commonest problems in the treatment of the phenomenon in ...linguistics and literary theory. These are shown to originate in imprecise terminology. The first controversal issue is the question what sound symbolism actually subsumes, as very different cocncepts are sometimes discussed and evaluated under this label. The second issue concerns the imprecise usage of the term "onomatopoeia" both in linguistics and literary theory, since it is often usedto describe also more abstract auditory effects or (in literary theory) any categorie of sound symbolism at all. The third issue discussed are the different levels of motivation which are displayed in sound instrumentation in poetry and need to be kept distinct. The paper offers a possible system of classification, while admitting that the analysis of sound symbolism still remains to a certain extent subjective.
