Monitoring of the situation in the field of cardiovascular diseases is becoming one of the most important public health activities during past years. This is especially true of many developed ... countries, including Slovenia, where these diseases still constitute the leading cause of mortality. In Slovenia, the WHO-CINDI (Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Diseases Intervention) programme has the pioneering role in monitoring the situation regarding cardiovascular diseases in adults, especially with its cross-sectional surveys on risk factor prevalence in the demonstration region of the city of Ljubljana, among which the first one was carried out already in1990/91. At the national level, we started to monitor the situation regarding risk factors for cardiovascular diseases systematically in the year 2001, when the first survey on Risk factors for noncommunicable diseases in adult Slovene population was carried out, and the Nationwide cardiovascular disease prevention programme , together with its Registry of individuals at high risk of cardiovascular diseases was also started the same year. Before these projects started, the situation in this field has been monitored only bycollecting data on mortatity due to these causes. The established system is high-quality and has already proved to be an efficient help in decision-makingon where and how specific prevention activities should be carried out. Its success in the future will not depend solely on available financial resources, but also on participation of all the important stakeholders involved.
