    Costs connected with the treatment of stroke are among the highest throughout the world. Stroke has, in recent years, been increasingly recognized as a medical emergency. Our opinion in Slovenia is ... that to achieve highly efficienttreatment of acute ischemic stroke a chain of specialized medical unites should be established, which would offer the thrombolytic treatment in order to reduce the mortality rate and permanent physical disability. In stroke prevention, both in first and recurrent ones, and in prevention of transient ischemic attacks, carotid angioplasty with stenting is a procedure routinely performed in Clinical Centre in Ljubljana. Our results are comparable to those of world's best recognized centres. Endovascular treatmentof brain aneurysms has been an alternative method to micro-surgery for the last 15 years. In Slovenia this kind oftreatment has been introduced and is being practised in Ljubljana Clinical Centre and in University Centre of Maribor. Due to the European recommendations on ischemic stroke treatment every patient with ischemic stroke should be given the chance to be treated ina stroke unit.
