    Rate limits for sinus rhythm at rest with thresholds of 60/min and 99/min are probably too high. Several studies have shown that the heart rate of approx. 60/min is associated with the lowest ... mortality. Similarly, some other studies show advantage of the reduced heart rate in comparison with the elevated one. Drugs with a rate-lowering effect (beta-blockers, non-dihydropyridine calcium antagonists) reduce mortality of coronary patients. However, since these drugshave other effects too, their beneficial effect cannot be attributed to the reduced heart rate only. New drugs- If channel blockers-which lower heart rate without any additional haemodynamic or metabolic effect, wilt be able to demonstrate the influence of reduced heart rate on longevity, progress of atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, and heart failure.
