  • Bolnišnične obravnave zaradi črevesnih virusnih okužb = Viral gastroenteritis in hospitalized patients
    Zakotnik, Breda, 1956-, pediatrija
Viral gastroenteritis is a common infectious disease and one of the leading causes of hospitalization in Slovenia. This retrospective study included all patients who were hospitalized for viral ... gastroenteritis at the Department of Infectious Diseases in Ljubljana in 2006. Of 436 patients hospitalized with viral gastroenteritis, rotavirus was detected in 51% of cases and calicivirus in 37% of cases. In 4,8% of patients, more than one pathogen was detected. Although rotavirus infections occurred throughout the year, their peak incidence was detected in March and a significant number of cases were also observed in the summer months, while calicivirus gastroenteritis was more common during winter months. The majority of patients requiring hospitalization were children (95%), most of them (59%) from the 1 to 4-year age group, 20% were younger than one year and 16% were 5 to 14 years old. In 4,8% of patients with rotavirus and calicivirus gastroenteritis, the infectionwas nosocomial. The mean duration of hospitalization due to community-acquired rotavirus infection was 2,1 days and in the case of calicivirus infection it was 1,9 days; the duration of hospitalization in the case of nosocomial infection was 2,5 times longer.
