    Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy during the perinatal period is the most frequent cause of severe, longterm neurological deficit in children. Despite advances in ante- and intra- partum monitoring, ... and more effective neonatal resuscitation, the incidence of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy is still high. Until recently, newborns with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy only received supportive treatment. Several recent studies have confirmed that treatment of newborns with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy with induced hypothermia is neuroprotective. In this article the first clinical case of a newborn with severe bypoxicischaemic encephalopathy treated with induced systemic hypothermia in Slovenia, which was undertaken at the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, ispresented.
