Gašperšič, Dominik ; Jan, Janja ; Štamfelj, Iztok
Knowledge ansmg from studies in which researchers are trying to artificially create dental tissues or entire teeth by mimicking the natural process of tooth development are likely to find clinical ... application in the nearest future. Therefore, dentists may expect to encounter with increasing frequency different terms related to tooth development. This paper describes the first stage of tooth development, encompassing the appearance of the dental lami na and tooth germs in the bud, cap and bell stages. The result of early tooth development is a tooth crown composed of cells and intercellular substance without hard dental tissues. The developmental boundary between epithelial and ectomesenchymal cells is at the site of the future dentinoenamel junction. At the same time, a part of epithelial cells and a part of ectomesenchymal cells are about to become differentiated into ameloblasts and odontoblasts, respectively. The development of permanent teeth is similar to that of pri mary teeth. Early tooth development is governed by reciprocal interactions between ectomesenchymal and epithelial celis, which are mediated by signallingmolecules.
