Cvetko, Erika ; Skalerič, Uroš, 1945-2023 ; Čižman, Milan
Background: Inappropriate use of antibiotics is the main cause of increasing bacterial resistance, which has become an important health problem in Europe and worldwide. Studies demonstrate a growing ... resistance to antibiotics among oral microbes, inappropriate use of antibiotics in dentistry, and inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics for diseases of the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to analyze the habits of Slovene general dentists in prescribing antioiotics for the treatment of oral infections. Methods: ln February 2012, an anonymous questionnaire was sent to all active dentists in Slovenia (1,410). Data on the frequency of antibiotic prescription, the clinical signs and diagnoses for which dentists would prescribe an antibiotic, the type of antibiotic prescribed, and the duration of antibiotic therapy were assessed. Results: Out of 178 (12.6 %) completed questionnaires returned by 25 March 2012, 147 were received from general dentists. Analysis of these questionnaires showed that 77% of respondents prescribe up to 1 course of antibiotics per week, and 4.1 % prescribe antibiotics on a daily basis. A small proportion of dentists prescribe antibiotics at the patient's request or due to lack of time for local treatment. For 18.4% of respondents, pain per se is a sufficient reason for antibiotic prescription. Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic treatment for the majority of infections. Most dentists (75%) tend to prescribe antibiotics for 7 days. Conclusion: The habits of our dentists in prescribing antibiotics are not optimal. The present results provide a basis for implementing measuresto improve this situation.
