SmartWeld - an overviewFarrar, J.C.M. ; Willis Marshall, AdamSmartWeld is a fifth framework EU funded project under the competitive and sustainable growth programme, which has been running for more than two years. The primary objective is to develop welding ... consumables and procedures suitable for the welding of creep resisting steels without the need for post weld heat treatment (PWHT). This technology is expected to result in major cost savings in the repair and refurbishment of old and inefficient power stations throughout Europe. The consortium consists of thirteen partners from six European Nations, including a number from former Eastern Europe. A steel maker, two welding consumable manufacturers, two fabricators, one power generator, two universities and six R & D organisations are represented and bring a wide range of practical skills and theoretical expertise to the project. The "smart" concept can be described as the deposition of tough and ductile weld metal, which is relieved of residual stresses during welding and the early stages of service, and then goes on to develop the necessary long term creep performance. This paper describes the background to the project, the approach being adopted for the development of "smart" welding consumables and the tests being used to assess their performance. A complementary aspect of the project is the development of low stress welding technology. A range ofhigh temperature testing techniques is being used and these are briefly described. A number of parallel activities, which include modelling of microstructures and residual stresses, manufacture of an advanced creep resisting steel-T24, remnant life assessment and the manufacture of real power generation components, are also outlined. The paper is intended to act as an introduction to a number of others arising from the SmartWeld project, which will describe certain aspects in more detail and present some of the emerging results.Source: Materiali in tehnologije = Materials and technology. - ISSN 1580-2949 (Letn. 38, pos. št., okt. 2004, str. 5-8)Type of material - article, component partPublish date - 2004Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 373418
