  • Pomen dislipidemije za aterosklerozo = The relationship between dyslipidaemias and atherosclerosis
    Cevc, Matija
There is a well-known close connection between dyslipidaemias and atherosclerosis. The most important lipids to be linked with progression of atherosclerotic plaque are low density lipoproteins ... (LDL), while high density lipoproteins (HDL) are connected with retardation of the atherosclerotic process. It has been shown that the progression of atherosclerosis can be slowed down by lowering LDL lipoproteins in the primary prevention of coronaryheart disease (CHD) and even more in the secondary prevention of CHD. There are many angiographic studies showing moderate regression and stabilization of atherosclerotic plaque in patients with CHD by lowering LDL cholesterol. Results of clinical studies demonstrated that lowering LDL cholesterol significantly and markedly decreased coronary and cardiovascular mortality, performed revascularization procedures and the need for hospitalisation and treatment for CHD. The overall moratality was reduced as well. Therefore it is reasonable to lower LDL cholesterol in all patients withCHD. The optimal lowering of LDL cholesterol is not yet known (should LDL cholesterol be lowered below 2.5 mmol/L or 3.2 mmol/L or 20% below the baseline value).
