    The aim of this work was to characterise the microstructure of horizontally continuously cast Ni-based superalloy GMR 235 (bar of 50 mm diameter) in order to get an insight into the processes taking ... place during continuous casting. The microstructure consisted of ▫$\gamma$▫-matrix (Ni-rich solid solution with ▫$\gamma^'-Ni_3(Al. Ti)$▫ percipitates. In addition, there were predominantly, in the interdendritic region, also the following phases: MC-carbide, ▫$M_3B_2-boride$▫ and Ti(C,N)-carbonuitride. Their size, morphology, and distribution were dependent on local solidification conditions. The areas around the primary and secondary witness marks were investigated in detail enbling us to understand the processes taking place during the formation of the solid skin upon solidification. This knowledge is critical for optimization of the process parameters in order to make the continuous casting process more reliable and to obtain the required properties.
