The social identity tradition has not reached a consensus regarding the question of whether identifying with an ingroup directly leads to ingroup bias, or whether this association may be moderated by ...group norms. One previous study (Jetten, Spears, & Manstead, 1997) showed that an ingroup norm of fairness as opposed to differentiation seems to moderate this link between identification and ingroup bias. The present research aims to examine the extent to which real-life group members (Kurds and Turks) with a history of conflict engage in ingroup bias as a function of their level of identification when group norms prescribe favoritism or equality. In Study 1, Kurdish and Turkish participants report their ingroup norm (egalitarianism or favoritism) and allocate a fixed amount of funds between Kurds and Turks in a hypothetical situation. The results show a significant interaction between social identification and group norm on ingroup bias. Accordingly, ingroup bias increases with the strength of identification when the norm is favoritism; however, there is no relationship when the norm is egalitarianism. Study 2 manipulates the ingroup norm for Kurdish and Turkish participants in the same hypothetical context. This time, the interaction is marginally significant but in a similar direction, where stronger identification leads to higher ingroup bias in the favoritism norm condition, yet this effect disappears in the egalitarianism norm condition. These findings extend the literature on the role of norms in intergroup relations, emphasizing the important role of egalitarian norms in reducing ingroup bias even in real-life conflict-ridden contexts.
Toplumda nadiren temas edilen gruplara yönelik tutum ve sosyal mesafe, geçmişten günümüze kadar sosyal psikolojinin ve gelişim psikolojisinin yakından çalıştığı konulardan biri olmuştur. Sağır ...bireyler toplumda görece daha seyrek temas edilen sosyal gruplardandır (Dikyuva, Makaroğlu ve Arık, 2015; İlkbaşaran, 2016). Özellikle Türkiye'de yürütülen ve çeşitli demografik özellikleri ile bu gruplara yönelik tutum ve inançları inceleyen sınırlı sayıda çalışma (örn.,Kemaloğlu, 2016) bulunmaktadır. Alan yazında özellikle çeşitli demografik özellikler ile tutumlar ve inançlar arasındaki ilişkiyi betimleyerek resimleyen yeni çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır. Buradan yola çıkılarak bu çalışmada çeşitli demografik özelliklerin sağır bireylere yönelik inançlar ile ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Böylelikle gelecek çalışmalar için ilgili değişkenlerin ilişkisini ön bir çalışma yaparak betimlemek hedeflenmiştir. Araştırmaya yaş ortalaması 27.44 olan 18-62 yaş arasında 164 kişi katılmıştır. Sağırlara yönelik tutumu ölçmek Berkay, Gardner ve Smith'in (1995) Sağırlar Hakkındaki Düşünceler Ölçeği Opinions About Deaf Peoples Scale kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, örneklemimizin çok küçük bir kısmının birinci derece (n=6) ve/veya ikinci derece (n = 13) yakınlarının sağır bireyler olduğunu, bu kişilerden de yalnızca dördünün işaret dili aracılığıyla iletişim kurabildiğini göstermiştir. Katılımcıların günlük hayatlarında sağır bir bireyle temas etme ortalamaları (M = 2.02 / 5'li Likert tipi ölçüm üzerinden) oldukça düşüktür. Yaş ve sağırlara yönelik tutum arasında bir ilişki yoktur. Eğitim düzeyi (r = .22) ve ailede kişi başına düşen maddi gelir (r = .24) yükseldikçe sağırlara yönelik tutum olumlu yönde artmaktadır. Kadınların sağırlara yönelik tutumları (M = 4.31) erkeklerden (M = 3.99) daha olumludur, p < .001. Bu çalışma cinsiyet, eğitim düzeyi ve maddi gelir gibi demografik özelliklerin sağırlara yönelik düşünceler ile ilişkili olduğunu göstermiştir.

Bu araştırmanın amacı iç grup özdeşiminin iç grup yanlılığı üzerindeki etkisinde iç grup normunun düzenleyici etkisini incelemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda üç deneysel çalışma yürütülmüştür. İlk ...çalışmada, gerçek grup üyelerinin iç grup özdeşimleri ölçülmüş ve iç grup normları eşitlikçilik, kayırmacılık veya kontrol grubu olacak şekilde değişimlenmiştir. İç grup yanlılığı, iç grup ve dış grup arasında spor programı süresi paylaştırma, spor gazetesi sayfası paylaştırma ve olumlu özelliklerle değerlendirme ölçümlerindeki iç grup lehine fark olarak işlevselleştirilmiştir. Sonuçlar, iç grup özdeşimi arttıkça iç grup yanlılığının da arttığını, ancak iç grup özdeşimi ve iç grup yanlılığı arasındaki ilişkide grup normunun düzenleyici etkisinin olmadığını göstermiştir. Diğer iki çalışmada laboratuvarda oluşturulmuş minimal gruplar kullanılmıştır. İkinci çalışmada bir matematik görevinden sonra katılımcılara seçkisiz olarak analitik veya bütüncül düşünme-karar verme stiline sahip oldukları şeklinde sahte bir geribildirim verilerek iki grup oluşturulmuş ve ilk çalışmadaki gibi norm ataması yapılmıştır. Ayrıca iç grup özdeşimi de ölçülmek yerine yüksek ve düşük seviyelerde olacak şekilde değişimlenmiştir. Üçüncü çalışmada ise iç grup özdeşimi, yine ikinci deneysel çalışmadakine benzer bir yöntem ile değişimlenmiş; ancak bu kez düzenleyicilik etkisi grup normunun bir öncülü olarak değerlendirilen iç grup biçimlenmesi bağlamında araştırılmıştır. İkinci ve üçüncü çalışmada özdeşimin, grup normunun ya da biçimlenmesinin iç grup yanlılığı üzerinde temel etkisi gözlenmemiştir. Grup özdeşiminin, grup normuyla veya grup biçimlemesiyle etkileşimi de istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmamıştır. Psikoloji öğrencisi olmayan toplumun farklı kesimlerinden katılımcıları örnekleyen bu üç çalışma, alanyazının aksine grup üyelerinin grup normlarına veya biçimlenmelerine bağlı olarak bölüştürme davranışı sergilemediğini göstermektedir. Bulgular, metodolojik farklılıklar ve sosyal psikolojideki tekrarlanabilirlik sorunu bağlamında tartışılmıştır.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to examine the moderating role of ingroup norm on the association between ingroup identification on ingroup bias. We also examined whether this association varied depending on the group formation. To do this, we conducted three experimental studies. Study 1 (N = 103) focused on real groups (Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray Football Club fans), where we manipulated ingroup norm and then measured ingroup identification. Specifically, in order to manipulate ingroup norm, participants were randomly assigned to an “egalitarian” norm condition, a “favoritism” norm condition, or a control condition. Ingroup bias was operationalized through a difference score in allocating screen time for a sports program on TV, allocating page spaces in sports newspapers, and positive evaluations via adjective ratings. Results showed that higher identification was associated with stronger ingroup bias. However, the moderating effect of ingroup norm (egalitarianism vs. favoritism) on the relationship between ingroup identification and ingroup bias was not significant. Study 2 and Study 3 were based on minimal groups created in the lab setting. In Study 2 (N = 122), two groups labeled “analytical” and “holistic” thinkers were formed based on false feedback (i.e., participants were told that their answers to math problems would be categorized based on an algorithm), and then ingroup norm (egalitarianism vs. favoritism) was manipulated as the same way in the first study. In addition, ingroup identification was manipulated rather than being merely measured. In Study 3, (N = 94) ingroup identification was manipulated with a similar procedure used in Study 2; but this time, the moderating effect of group formation (competitive vs. cooperative groups), rather than group norm, was investigated. In Studies 2 and 3, no main effects of ingroup identification, ingroup norm, and group formation on ingroup bias were obtained. The interaction effects of identification with ingroup norm or formation were not statistically significant either. These three experimental studies showed that, contrary to the literature, intergroup members did not exhibit distributional ingroup bias based on a type of group norms and group formations. These findings were discussed in the context of literature, methodological differences, and the problem of reproducibility in social psychology.
This study aims to reveal the fake news content in the context of the social identity approach and to examine the mediating role of perceived outgroup on the association between ingroup ...identification and detecting fake news blaming ingroup, outgroup, or fictional groups. Study 1 found that fake news could be gathered under six themes: contacted‐outgroup blaming, represented‐outgroup blaming, outgroup derogation, outgroup appreciation, ingroup glorification, and phantom‐mastermind blaming. In preregistered Study 2 with representative non‐weird participants (N = 216), we examined the mediating role of perceived outgroup threat on the association between ingroup identification and detecting fake news revealed in Study 1. Perceived outgroup threat was only mediating for detecting outgroup‐blaming fake news when intuitive and analytical thinking styles were controlled. Detecting ingroup‐blaming fake news was associated with ingroup identification. Analytical thinking predicted only detecting phantom‐mastermind‐blaming fake news. Findings demonstrated that the contents of fake news play a vital role in detecting them, and variables pointing to content (i.e., ingroup identification for ingroup‐blaming fake news, and perceived outgroup threat for outgroup‐blaming fake news) are predictive for detecting fake news.
The main aim of this study was to examine the cognitive profile and academic achievement of children with absence epilepsy. It is investigated whether all scale intelligence score, intelligence ...subscale scores, and academic achievement of the children with absence epilepsy differed from healthy peers and Turkish norm values. Nineteen children with absence epilepsy and 19 healthy children participate in the study. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) is used to measure their intelligence scores. A teacher assessment form (Teacher's Report Form (TRF)) is obtained from the participants' teachers for the measurement of academic achievement, and the students' report cards are collected as an additional measure of it. Participants with absence epilepsy have significantly lower scores of total intelligence score (Mean (M) = 76.68, Standard Deviation (SD) = 25.18), verbal comprehension score (M = 81.68, SD = 25.29), perceptual reasoning score (M = 85.47, SD = 20.61), processing speed score (M = 77.95, SD = 18.61), and working memory (M = 83.74, SD = 19.04), which are measured by WISC-IV, than healthy peers (respectively M = 105.84, SD = 16.20; M = 105.47, SD = 18.12; M = 103.63, SD = 12.88; M = 104.05, SD = 12.98; M = 104.74, SD = 18.97) and norm values (M = 100, SD = 10). No difference is observed between the subscale scores of WISC-IV for within group with absence epilepsy. Moreover, they have lower Turkish language (M = 73.65, SD = 19.19) and mathematics (M = 76.26, SD = 22.29) grade report scores than healthy peers (respectively M = 90.76, SD = 12.01; M = 88.64, SD = 15.93). There is no difference between the two groups in terms of the academic achievement obtained from the TRF. It is necessary to support children with absence epilepsy academically. We analyzed whether the current pattern has changed by comparing the intelligent scores and academic achievement of children with absence epilepsy who have recovered after treatment with their healthy peers. In fact, there is no difference between the children with absence epilepsy who have recovered after treatment and their healthy peers in terms of total intelligence score and its subscale scores. Similarly, there is no difference between them in terms of mathematics score on their report. Only the difference in the score of Turkish language continues in the same direction.
•Children with absence epilepsy had lower WISC-IV scores in all subscales and full test than their healthy peers.•In order to measure academic achievement children's report card and Teacher Report Form (TRF) were used.•Children with absence epilepsy had lower mathematics and Turkish scores.•However, there was no difference between mathematics and Turkish scores accordingly with regard to TRF.•It is necessary to support children with absence epilepsy academically.
İnsanlar benlik saygılarını yükseltmek veya gruplar arası ilişkilerdendeki avantajlı konumlarını korumak için iç grup üyelerini dış grup üyelerinden daha olumlu değerlendirebilirler. İç grup ...yanlılığı olarak ifade edilebilecek bu davranış süresince hem iç - dış grup üyelerine yönelik kişisel tutumlar hem de gruplar arası ilişkilerin tarihsel geçmişi ve bu tarihsel sürecin yarattığı ya da değiştirdiği kültürel kodlar aktif olarak kullanılır. Böylelikle iç ve dış grubun değerlendirilmesinde farklı nedensel atıflar ortaya çıkar. Oysa alanyazında iç grup yanlılığı çoğunlukla bir bağımlı değişken olarak ele alınıp, genellikle iç grup yanlılığı üzerinde etkisi bulunan değişkenler ile bu değişkenlerin iç grup yanlılığı üzerindeki etkisinde rolü olan düzenleyici ve aracı değişkenler incelenmiştir. Bu araştırma ise iç grup yanlılığı sergileme ile iç ve dış gruba eşit pay verme davranışlarının nedensel atıflarını betimlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada kendisini Türkiye’nin en kalabalık iki etnik grubundan -Türkler ve Kürtler- birisine ait olarak kimliklendiren katılımcılardan, her iki grubun da sorumlusu olduğu belirtilen toplumsal bir kargaşa durumunda bir miktar parayı Kürtler ve Türkler arasında bölüştürmeleri istenmiştir. Ardından katılımcılardan kaynak paylaştırma kararlarının ardında yatan nedenleri açık uçlu olarak yazmaları istenmiştir. Verilen cevapların içerikleri tematik analiz bağlamında incelenerek iç ve dış gruplarına eşit pay veren katılımcıların bu davranışlarını beş -ayrımcılığa karşı eşitlik ve adalet, insan olmak, eşit ihtiyaç, çatışmadan kaçınmak ve grupları yeniden kategorilemek-, iç grup yanlılığı yapan katılımcılar için ise dört -benzerlik, iç grubu olumlama, dış grubu olumsuzlama ve ihtiyaç- nedene atfettikleri görülmüştür. Tematik kodlama için yargıcılar arası tutarlılık Cohen’s κ .65 ile .92 arasında değişmektedir. Temaların Türk ve Kürt katılımcıla için kullanım oranları ve bu oranlar arasındaki farklılıklar Sosyal Kimlik Kuramı kapsamında tartışılmıştır.
People may favor and evaluate their in-group members more positively due to raise their self-esteem and protect their advantageous social positions. Both personal attitudes toward in and out-group ...members and historical background about intergroup relations are actively used during this behavior which is called in-group favoritism; thus, different attributions appear when evaluating in and out-group members. But in-group favoritism is generally discussed as a dependent variable and it is examined that what are the mediator and moderator variables of the effect of various independent variables on the in-group bias. The current study, however, aims to describe those causal attributions of in-group favoritism or allocating equal resource to in and out-group. Therefore, it is asked participants who are Turkish or Kurdish to allocate a sum of resource between Turkish and Kurdish in the context of the social turmoil on which both sides are responsible. Then, participants were asked to write the reasons behind the resource allocation decisions as open-ended. The contents of the answers were examined in the context of thematic analysis. Participants who give an equal share to their in and out-group attribute to five reasons: (1) Equality and justice against discrimination, (2) Being human, (3) Equal need, (4), Avoiding the conflict, and (5) Recategorization of groups. Meanwhile in participants who give greater amount of resource to their in-group (i.e., in-group favoristic group members) attribute to four reasons: (1) Similarity, (2) Affirming in-group, (3) Negation out-group, and (4) needs. Interrater consistency (Cohen's κ) for tematic codes are between .65 and .92. The rates of use of these themes by Turkish and Kurdish participants and the differences between them are discussed within the scope of Social Identity Theory.
Türkiye, the country hosting the most refugees in the world, hosted millions of refugees due to the Syrian civil war, the Taliban coup, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Among these communities, ...Syrian refugees are the majority in number and have been mainly influencing Türkiye’s agenda for the last decade. This unexpected and sudden contact elevated intergroup tension and conflict between host and Syrian refugee communities. We aimed to examine the association between multiculturalism, positive and negative emotions, perceived outgroup threat, social distance, and xenophobia toward refugees among non-WEIRD participants in the prejudice-intense intergroup context through two correlational studies (
N
total
= 898) to shed light on possible remedies for these conflicts. Study 1 revealed that multiculturalism negatively predicted social distance toward Syrian refugees. This association was mediated by positive and negative emotions. Study 2, which focused on xenophobia as an outcome, found that multiculturalism negatively predicted xenophobia, and positive and negative emotions had a mediator role on the association between these variables. We also found that participants with higher social distancing towards Syrian refugees had lower and poorer intergroup contact quality and perceived more outgroup threat than those with lower social distancing. The findings indicated that greater multiculturalism and positive emotions were associated with low social distance and xenophobia in the prejudice-intense context. We discussed the findings in terms of the potential benefits of multiculturalism and the positive emotions for attitudes towards refugees in prejudice-intense relationships between hosts and refugees.
