GeFe2O4, also known as brunogeierite, is a rare mineral of germanium. It has a normal spinel structure and, as with many other spinels, amazing functional properties thanks to its peculiar structural ...features. In the past, its spectroscopic, optical, magnetic and electronic properties were determined; then, for many years, this compound was left behind. Only recently, a renewed interest in this oxide has arisen, particularly for its application in the electrochemical field. In this review paper, the crystal structure of GeFe2O4 will be described, as well as the synthesis methods required to obtain single crystals or polycrystalline powders. Its spectroscopic, magnetic, optical and electrical properties will be reported in detail. Then, successful applications known so far will be described: its use as anode in Lithium Ion and Sodium Ion Batteries and as electrocatalyst for urea oxidation reaction.
Patients with Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease (LEPAD) have been recently identified as target groups for structured Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation (CPR) programs, whose core ...components and intervention goals are now well recognized. Historically, exercise training (ET) programs have been employed for the treatment of LEPAD with typical intermittent claudication, and several meta-analysis documented improvements in walking distances of enrolled patients. Both in American and European guidelines, a frequency of at least 3 sessions per week and program duration of 12 weeks were judged as optimal, while recommended sessions lengths were 30-45 minutes and 30-60 minutes respectively. Among emerging aspects in the field of LEPAD rehabilitation, 1) the extended role of CPR programs in stages other than that of intermittent claudication, 2) an updated identification of predictors of poor outcome after ET, 3) the attributable effect of exercise on global cardio-respiratory fitness in LEPAD, 4) the combination of ET and invasive measures for advanced stages of LEPAD, and 5) the role of community walking programs have been discussed.
A proper determination of the exercise intensity is important for the rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) since it affects the effectiveness and medical safety of exercise ...training. In 2013, the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), together with the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation, published a position statement on aerobic exercise intensity assessment and prescription in cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR). Since this publication, many subsequent papers were published concerning the determination of the exercise intensity in CR, in which some controversies were revealed and some of the commonly applied concepts were further refined. Moreover, how to determine the exercise intensity during resistance training was not covered in this position paper. In light of these new findings, an update on how to determine the exercise intensity for patients with CVD is mandatory, both for aerobic and resistance exercises. In this EAPC position paper, it will be explained in detail which objective and subjective methods for CR exercise intensity determination exist for aerobic and resistance training, together with their (dis)advantages and practical applications.
Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterised by a vulnerability status associated with declining function of multiple physiological systems and loss of physiological reserves. Two main models of ...frailty have been advanced: the phenotypic model (primary frailty) or deficits accumulation model (secondary frailty), and different instruments have been proposed and validated to measure frailty. However measured, frailty correlates to medical outcomes in the elderly, and has been shown to have prognostic value for patients in different clinical settings, such as in patients with coronary artery disease, after cardiac surgery or transvalvular aortic valve replacement, in patients with chronic heart failure or after left ventricular assist device implantation. The prevalence, clinical and prognostic relevance of frailty in a cardiac rehabilitation setting has not yet been well characterised, despite the increasing frequency of elderly patients in cardiac rehabilitation, where frailty is likely to influence the onset, type and intensity of the exercise training programme and the design of tailored rehabilitative interventions for these patients. Therefore, we need to start looking for frailty in elderly patients entering cardiac rehabilitation programmes and become more familiar with some of the tools to recognise and evaluate the severity of this condition. Furthermore, we need to better understand whether exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation may change the course and the prognosis of frailty in cardiovascular patients.
Exercise training is recommended for patients with heart failure by major societies' guidelines. It improves exercise capacity and quality of life, reduces symptoms of depression, can improve ...survival, and reduce the risk for hospitalizations. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation can be offered with different modalities, such as continuous or interval aerobic training, resistance, and inspiratory muscle training. The intervention must follow an accurate evaluation of the patient's cardiovascular conditions and functional capacity. Despite the multiple benefits of exercise training, there is a lack of adherence to exercise-based programs, due to socioeconomic factors, patients' characteristics, and lack of referral.
The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is the gold standard for the diagnostic evaluation of exercise intolerance, as for individualized prescription of structured physical training. Exercise is a ...core component of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation activites, but unfortunately the limited availability of CPET-derived informations often leads to unpowered program's prescription in real life. The Italian Alliance for Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Prevention (ITACARE-P) has developed a CPET reporting form specifically oriented to exercise prescription, in order to facilitate interventions on lifestyle and during phase II/phase III cardiac rehabilitation programmes. The ITACARE-P CPET reporting form includes a limited number of key variables for clinical practice and individual domains of exercise intensity, suitable both for threshold-based and range-based aerobic training protocols. The adoption of the ITACARE-P CPET reporting form could improve non-pharmacological intervention in preventive cardioloy and facilitate collaborative research on physical training within the network of cardiac rehabilitation facilities.
Ferrites, a broad class of ceramic oxides, possess intriguing physico-chemical properties, mainly due to their unique structural features, that, during these last 50–60 years, made them the materials ...of choice for many different applications. They are, indeed, applied as inductors, high-frequency materials, for electric field suppression, as catalysts and sensors, in nanomedicine for magneto-fluid hyperthermia and magnetic resonance imaging, and, more recently, in electrochemistry. In particular, ZnFe2O4 and its solid solutions are drawing scientists’ attention for the application as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The main reasons are found in the low cost, abundance, and environmental friendliness of both Zn and Fe precursors, high surface-to-volume ratio, relatively short path for Li-ion diffusion, low working voltage of about 1.5 V for lithium extraction, and the high theoretical specific capacity (1072 mAh g−1). However, some drawbacks are represented by fast capacity fading and poor rate capability, resulting from a low electronic conductivity, severe agglomeration, and large volume change during lithiation/delithiation processes. In this review, the main synthesis methods of spinels will be briefly discussed before presenting the most recent and promising electrochemical results on ZnFe2O4 obtained with peculiar morphologies/architectures or as composites, which represent the focus of this review.
