A series of multicomponent glasses containing up to five oxides are studied using classical molecular dynamics simulations and neutron scattering experiments. The focus is on the role of magnesium in ...determining the structural properties of these glasses and the possible mixed effect during a sodium/magnesium substitution. Calculated structure functions (pair correlation function and structure factor) rather accurately reproduce their experimental counterpart, and we show that more fine structural features are qualitatively reproduced well, despite some discrepancies in the preferential spatial distribution between sodium and magnesium to aluminum and boron, as well as the nonbridging oxygen, distribution. The simulated systems offer a solid basis to support previous experimental findings on the composition–structure relationship, allowing for further analysis and property calculation. It is confirmed that the substitution of sodium by magnesium leads to the decrease of four-fold boron and a modification of the alkali coordinations with a significant change of the network structure. Specifically, magnesium coordination extracted from numerical simulations highlights a potential dissociation from penta- to tetra- and hexahedral units with increasing MgO contents along the glass series, which could not be resolved experimentally.
BACKGROUND. This paper examined the hypothesis that males with first-episode psychosis (FEP) experience lower pre-morbid adjustment, greater social disability and more self-perceived needs at illness ...onset than females(by controlling for duration of untreated psychosis, diagnosis, age and symptoms at onset). Results disconfirming this hypothesis were thought to suggest the potentially mediating role of social context in determining the impact of symptoms and disability on the everyday lives of male patients in the early phase of psychosis. METHOD. A large epidemiologically representative cohort of FEP patients (n=517) was assessed within the Psychosis Incident Cohort Outcome Study (PICOS) framework – a multi-site research project examining incident cases of psychosis in Italy's Veneto region. RESULTS. Despite poorer pre-morbid functioning and higher social disability at illness onset, males reported fewer unmet needs in the functioning domain than females did. An analysis of help provided by informal care givers showed that males received more help from their families than females did. This finding led us to disconfirm the second part of the hypothesis and suggest that the impact of poorer social performance and unmet needs on everyday life observed in male patients might be hampered by higher tolerance and more support within the family context.CONCLUSIONS. These findings shed new light on rarely investigated sociocultural and contextual factors that may account for the observed discrepancy between social disability and needs for care in FEP patients. They also point to a need for further research on gender differences, with the ultimate aim of delivering gender-sensitive effective mental health care.
We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e(+)e(-) collider DAPhiNE. Almost monochromatic K(-)'s produced through the decay of phi(1020) ...mesons are used to observe K(-) absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K(-)pp through its two-body decay into a Lambda hyperon and a proton. The binding energy and the decay width are determined from the invariant-mass distribution as 115(+6)(-5)(stat)(+3)(-4)(syst) MeV and 67(+14)(-11)(stat)(+2)(-3)(syst) MeV, respectively.
Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are the new frontier in gas trackers. Among this kind of devices, the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) chambers are widely used. The experimental signals acquired with ...the detector must obviously be reconstructed and analysed. In this contribution, a new offline software to perform reconstruction, alignment and analysis on the data collected with APV-25 and TIGER ASICs will be presented. GRAAL (Gem Reconstruction And Analysis Library) is able to measure the performance of a MPGD detector with a strip segmented anode (presently). The code is divided in three parts: reconstruction, where the hits are digitized and clusterized; tracking, where a procedure fits the points from the tracking system and uses that information to align the chamber with rotations and shifts; analysis, where the performance is evaluated (e.g. efficiency, spatial resolution,etc.). The user must set the geometry of the setup and then the program returns automatically the analysis results, taking care of different conditions of gas mixture, electric field, magnetic field, geometries, strip orientation, dead strip, misalignment and many others.
The J/ψ meson has negative G parity so that, in the limit of isospin conservation, its decay into π+π− should be purely electromagnetic. However, the measured branching fraction B(J/ψ→π+π−) exceeds ...by more than 4.5 standard deviations the expectation computed according to BABAR data on the e+e−→π+π− cross section. The possibility that the two-gluon plus one-photon decay mechanism is not suppressed by G-parity conservation is discussed, even by considering other multipion decay channels. As also obtained by phenomenological computation, such a decay mechanism could be responsible for the observed discrepancy. Finally, we notice that the BESIII experiment, having the potential to perform an accurate measurement of the e+e−→π+π− cross section in the J/ψ mass energy region, can definitely prove or disprove this strong G-parity-violating mechanism by confirming or confuting the BABAR data.
An overview of the experimental results achieved so far by the FINUDA experiment 1 in the search of deeply bound kaonic aggregates with two or three baryons is reported.
The experiment BESIII, running at the accelerator BEPCII in Beijing (P.R.C.), is going to be updated with the replacement of the Inner Drift Chamber with a Cylindrical triple-GEM Inner Tracker ...(CGEM-IT). In the R&D stage, two standalone C++ codes were implemented: GTS (Garfield-based Triple-GEM Simulator), for digitization and tuning of simulated data to the experimental ones, and GRAAL (GEM Reconstruction And Analysis Library), for the reconstruction and analysis of the experimental events collected in testbeams. GTS simulates the triple-GEM response to the particle passage, treating each stage separately: ionization, GEM properties, gas mixture, magnetic field and finally the induction of the signal on the anode. The necessary information was extracted by GARFIELD++ simulations, parametrized and used as input in GTS. This speeds up the simulation, since GTS performs only samplings instead of the full digitization chain. The simulated events were reconstructed with the same procedure used for experimental data and tuning factors were evaluated to obtain a satisfactory match. GRAAL is used in the analysis of the testbeam experimental data. It provides several levels of reconstruction: from the cluster formation, gathering contiguous firing strips, to the spatial position and the signal time reconstruciton. Two algorithms are used: the charge centroid and the micro-TPC, which exploit the charge deposition on the strips and the time information. Also a merging of the two algorithms is available to efficiently weight the two outcomes and obtain the best estimate of the spatial coordinate. Moreover, GRAAL performs tracking and alignment. Both codes are going to be made available also for other MPGDs simulation and reconstruction.
