On the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in Croatia, art has taken its place, respectively the skill of textile handicrafts, better known as lacemaking, which rests on preservation, ...promotion and sustainability tradition. Consequently, sustainable development is based on an integrated, comprehensive approach to economic, ecological and social values through the natural, social and human sciences. Interweaving threads using a needle or a stick forms a characteristic shape of textile activity that requires exceptional calmness, patience, precision and specific work of hands whose product is a handicraft called lace. This work aims to explore and compare the role and purpose of Croatian lace in the past and today to raise awareness of tradition and the value that Croatian lace still carries today. The lace tradition in Croatia has been nurtured for centuries, especially in smaller rural areas where women have woven their traces in the rich history of folk art by making lace. Silk, cotton, linen, silver and gold threads form a hollow work worthy of admiration. With their technological and artistic characteristics, lace works are not only an integral part of the culture of the community but also an indicator of artistic creativity in Croatia.
The aim of the paper is to improve the quality of university teaching in the direction of preserving the vocal health of future teachers. The initial education of teachers, as future voice professionals, should include theoretical and practical content related to voice hygiene. Research goal was to establish to what extent their education includes these contents by applying the method of analysis of study programs with regard to the representation of contents related to vocal hygiene. The results of the analysis indicate that today’s study programs of integrated undergraduate and graduate teacher studies in the Republic of Croatia do not show a tendency to consciously include the topic of vocal hygiene in their curricula, which should certainly be changed by introducing such content into existing compulsory subjects or (ideally) by introducing a new compulsory subject that would be dedicated to that topic.
Horse-assisted rehabilitation has been known since ancient times, and many benefits of therapeutic riding and the relationship between horses and people with special needs are recognized today. Due to the perceived importance of using animals for therapeutic purposes, the Faculty of Education in Osijek offers the elective course “Animal-assisted rehabilitation” in the Undergraduate University Study Programme of Educational Rehabilitation. The aim of this research was to examine the opinions of students about horse-assisted rehabilitation. All students who enrolled in the mentioned course (N=33) participated in the assessment, where they expressed their opinions using a Likert scale to indicate their agreement or disagreement with the proposed statements. The results of the research show that the majority of students agree that horse-assisted rehabilitation can help a child’s psychological development, social skills development, and motor skills development. The results of the research also indicate that the majority of students agree with the statement that it is desirable to develop a therapeutic approach with horses, and even 73% of students would like to repeat the exercise experience in the form of volunteer work. From the obtained research results, it can be concluded that the topics practically covered in horse-assisted rehabilitation fully fulfilled their purpose in the context of the future profession of an educational rehabilitator, and that there is a possibility of further research in the field of horse-assisted rehabilitation.
Phytophilous community on Myriophyllum spicatum was studied in a small artificial urban lake in the city of Osijek (eastern Croatia), during the spring and summer season in 2010. In the eutrophic ...conditions, macrophyte stands were well developed and in the formed periphyton representatives of the following invertebrate taxa were found: Hydrozoa, Nematoda, Gastropoda, Cladocera, Copepoda, Insecta larvae - including families Chironomidae and Coleoptera. They displayed differences in temporal abundance patterns. Two separate phases in macrophyte colonization with differences in invertebrate composition and abundance were recorded. Insect larvae, particularly Chironomidae, were most abundant in the first phase, through the spring period, and Hydra oligactis (brown hydra) was most abundant in the second phase, i.e. summer period. Concurrently, microcrustacean abundance declined towards the end of the summer. Results of the analyses indicated that water temperature and perihyton biomass were the variables exerting the main influence on the invertebrate assemblage, while interestingly, macrophyte size and biomass were negatively correlated with most of the fauna abundance. On the other hand, brown hydra was negatively correlated with all other invertebrate taxa, except gastropods. Larger surface of submersed macrophytes is the main parameter supporting the increase of invertebrate abundance due to providing protection from predators and growth for periphyton, an important food source for these phytophilous organisms. Macrophyte length was positively correlated with Hydra abundance, while Chironomids were more influenced by periphyton biomass. These organisms can indicate water quality conditions and a potential increase in primary and secondary production.
The importance of first aid knowledge is reflected in its goals: to save lives, prevent disability and shorten treatment and recovery time. Therefore, the Red Cross organizes a "Water Safety" project with the Faculty of Education at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. Through field teaching, seminars, and workshops conducted by employees and volunteers of the Red Cross, an effort has been made to educate students on processes aimed at preventing accidents on the water and procedures for assisting the injured or sick. The work aims to determine how familiar students, future educators, and teachers are with the basics of first aid and to increase awareness of the importance of knowing the basics of first aid. The research was conducted on a sample of 150 students of the Faculty of Education, using a survey questionnaire that was available in digital form and filled out voluntarily and anonymously by the students. The questionnaire consisted of 18 open, closed, and combined questions. After statistical analysis, the research showed that most students had encountered the theory of first aid in their previous education. However, they still need to learn the first aid procedures thoroughly. The need for continuous education and the importance of renewing practical first aid knowledge among students of educational sciences was highlighted, and recommendations for further research were given.
The aim of this paper is to analyse some of the aspects of sustainable development in Croatian school libraries within three operational groups (direct educational activity, professional library ...activity, cultural and public activity) in order to improve the understanding of school librarianship. The new challenges brought by the digital maturity of school institutions (primary and secondary schools, dormitories) and the new Global Goals of Sustainable Development by 2030 have influenced the change in the work tasks and activities of school librarians, which are based on inclusiveness, visual identity and sustainability of schools/dormitories both within and outside the existing frameworks of action. The positive and negative effects of school library operations were also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The research is quantitative, the method is an online questionnaire, and the data were statistically processed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS. The results show that a large number of library professionals are not empowered with the new professional skills of sustainable development, that they cooperate with colleagues from the school regarding the implementation of activities on sustainable development, that printed materials on environmentally friendly business operation and sustainable development are ahead of electronic and digital ones, that a smaller number of librarians are involved in projects, etc.
This paper presents a position of geography and geosciences in educational system of primary school teachers in Croatia. There are only a few information about the extent of geography and geosciences ...as a part of curriculum for primary school teachers on Faculties of Education in Croatia. On six Universities in ten different cities primary school teachers can study for their degrees. We compared all syllabuses and curricula on these Faculties regarding to courses that are lecturing geography and geosciences. From this comparison we can conclude that number of courses is different, number of mandatory and elective courses is different, and fieldwork as obligatory course is only represented in program of integrated undergraduate and graduate teacher studies on Faculty of Education in Osijek. Main topics and themes, presented in paper, in same courses vary even when they are using the same obligatory literature. As geography is one of the main subjects in primary schools and one of the fast developing nature sciences, authors are not satisfied with its content and amount of lecturing hours. In this paper authors stress out the main problems in course contents in geosciences of primary school teacher educational system in Croatia with several proposals for curriculum development.
Lake Jošava (Croatia) is a shallow reservoir surrounded by agricultural land. In the present study, the trophic cascade was tested by examining the effects of stocking with common carp on plankton ...and periphytic microphytes. Before stocking, the phytoplankton community was dominated by the chrysophyte

. In the epilithon and epiphyton, the predominant diatoms were prostrate, stalk-forming, and motile taxa representing an important food source for adult copepods. After stocking, phytoplankton biomass declined and the community shifted towards small centric diatoms, allowing the small-bodied zooplankton to exploit them. The lower biomass of adult copepods allowed rotifers to proliferate and exploit phytoplankton, while small cladocerans and nauplii fed primarily on epilithon. One month after stocking, phytoplankton was dominated by cryptophytes, small centric diatoms and chlorophytes, which were an important food for rotifers, while none of the zooplankton groups showed a significant relationship with the epilithic and epiphytic communities. By the end of the experiment, food was scarce due to reduced biomass of autotrophs, and zooplankton possibly began to feed on other sources. Our results add to the knowledge about the trophic cascade hypothesis in small shallow reservoirs.
Dissimilar life features of Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda enable these organisms to respond differently to changes in the hydrological regime which influence alterations in environmental ...characteristics. We investigated the effect of habitat heterogeneity (e.g. eupotamal, parapotamal, palaeopotamal) on individual zooplankton group assemblages and biodiversity indices (α, β and γ diversity) during hydro regime change in floodplain waterbodies. Dissolved oxygen and organic nitrogen concentrations changed significantly among hydrological states while water depth was affected by both site and hydro regime replacement. Each studied site supported different zooplankton assemblage that highly depended on species-specific responses to hydro regime change. Also, individual zooplankton groups exhibited different correlations with specific environmental parameters regarding site change. Throughout the study, rotifers′ local (α) and among-community (β) diversities were susceptible to the site and inundation change while the microcrustacean biodiversity pattern diverged. Copepods highly discriminated different habitat types and hydrological phases at the regional scale (γ diversity), while we found a complete lack of biodiversity dependence on both site and hydrology for Cladocera. Our results show that heterogeneous environments support the development of different zooplankton assemblages that express the within-group dissimilarities. They also point to the importance of identifying processes in hydrologically variable ecosystems that influence biodiversity patterns at an individual zooplankton group level. Our results suggest the use of appropriate zooplankton groups as biological markers in natural habitats and stress the importance of proper management in preserving biodiversity in floodplain areas.
